Work-family balance issues have gained prominence recently in China, in parallel with rapid socio-economic development. While the well-known shift from state-socialism to a market economy has generated rapid economic growth, the extent to which this growth has furthered the development of gender equality in China is doubtful, as growth-oriented economic policies predominate. Drawing on the findings from qualitative interviews with 25 working mothers in Shanghai, this research explores women's experiences of balancing work and family, and gendered expectations of family care. It also examines work-family balance policies in China from a gender perspective and evaluates policy implications on working mothers.
