Sirin Sung is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Social Policy at the Queen’s University Belfast, UK. She received her MA in Social Policy and Administration (1997) and a PhD in Social Policy from the University of Nottingham, UK (2002). Her main research interests include gender and social policy, work-life balance policies, and gender and benefits in both the UK and East Asian countries. Prior to taking up her current post as Senior Lecturer in Social Policy in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at QUB, she was a research officer at the University of Manchester (2003-2005) and the University of Oxford (2005-2006). From 2003 to 2005, she carried out three research projects through the Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester, funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and focused primarily on the social care workforce and work-family balance policies in the UK. Her subsequent work at the University of Oxford (2005-2006) on an ESRC Gender Equality Network research project focused mainly on low-income families and public policy issues in the UK. She was awarded the Leverhulme Study Abroad Research Fellowship in 2010, and the British Academy and Newton Fund Reciprocal Scheme/富达 Visiting Scholar Scheme in 2019, and the Academy of Korean Studies Fellowship (AKS) in 2023. Her publications include an edited volume Gender and Welfare States in East Asia: Confucianism or Gender Equality? (2014), Palgrave (With Gillian Pascall), ‘Gender, Work and Care in Policy and Practice’, in Critical Social Policy (2018),and a special issue (as a lead editor) on ‘Gendered Families: States and Societies in Transition’, in Contemporary Social Sciences Journal (2022).
